Yves Bissouma, the 30-year-old Malian international who spent the last four years in the Premier League, is on the verge of signing with Ajax Amsterdam. The defensive midfielder is currently in the Dutch capital undergoing medical examinations, with a deal expected to run through mid-2027 and include an option for an additional year.
For Ajax, it’s the kind of move that costs almost nothing if it doesn’t work and could pay off handsomely if it does. Bissouma arrives as a free agent after his contract with Tottenham Hotspur expired in the summer of 2026, making him available without a transfer fee.
From north London to the Eredivisie
Bissouma joined Spurs from Brighton & Hove Albion back in 2022 for a reported fee of around €30 million. He went on to make 111 appearances in a Tottenham shirt.
His time in north London was marked by stretches of limited playing time and a handful of off-field issues that complicated his standing at the club. The most notable incident came in 2024 when a video surfaced showing Bissouma with laughing gas, which resulted in a suspension from the squad.
Tottenham ultimately decided against renewing his contract when it expired, leaving the midfielder to search for a new home as an unrestricted free agent.
Ajax first expressed interest in Bissouma back in late August 2026 but didn’t follow through at the time. That interest never fully cooled, though, and now the club appears ready to bring him aboard.
Ajax’s low-cost rebuild under Cruijff
This signing fits neatly into the broader pattern Ajax has established under technical director Jordi Cruijff. The club has been pursuing a deliberate strategy of acquiring experienced players on free or low-cost transfers.
Ajax have already brought in players like Sofyan Amrabat and Daley Blind on similar terms. Cruijff reportedly views the Bissouma deal as a strategic addition rather than a marquee statement. A player with 46 international caps for Mali and years of Premier League experience doesn’t need to be a long-term cornerstone to be useful.
What Bissouma brings to the pitch
Bissouma built his reputation at Brighton as a ball-winning midfielder with elite athleticism and the ability to break up play in dangerous areas. At Ajax, he slots into a midfield that has been strengthened but still needs depth and defensive steel. Amrabat offers a similar profile, but having two players of that caliber competing for minutes is a luxury most Eredivisie clubs can’t afford.
Other clubs were reportedly interested in Bissouma’s services, adding some urgency to Ajax’s pursuit. The fact that he’s already in Amsterdam for his medical suggests the two sides are confident about reaching an agreement.
The risk-reward calculus
Every free-agent signing of a player with off-field history involves a calculation. Ajax is betting that Bissouma’s talent outweighs the complications that contributed to his departure from Tottenham. The short-term structure of the deal limits the downside: if things go sideways, the commitment expires in less than a year.
