Canada is making history at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and their captain is watching from the bench while they do it.
Alphonso Davies, the Bayern Munich left back and face of Canadian soccer, will not start in Canada’s round-of-16 match against Morocco in Houston. Coach Jesse Marsch named Davies among the substitutes, managing the star’s workload after a hamstring injury that has shadowed the team’s tournament run.
Why Davies is on the bench
Davies suffered the hamstring injury in early May, and the timing has been awkward throughout Canada’s World Cup campaign.
His return came in stages. Against South Africa on June 28, he came off the bench and played 15 minutes, the kind of carefully rationed appearance that tells you a coaching staff is still nervous about full fitness.
Marsch addressed the situation directly on July 3, saying the team would assess how to use Davies against Morocco. The answer, now confirmed, is: carefully, and not from kick-off.
Canada’s first knockout stage, full stop
Canada has never previously reached the knockout stage of a FIFA World Cup. The 1-0 victory against South Africa on June 28 that secured their place in the last 16 was a milestone the country had been waiting decades to reach.
The 2026 tournament is co-hosted by Canada, the United States, and Mexico. Morocco, their opponents, reached the semi-finals at the 2022 Qatar World Cup, becoming the first African nation to go that deep in the tournament.
What this means beyond the pitch
In 2021, Davies launched an NFT collection on Binance that moved 50,000 tokens. There has been no new token activity from Davies in connection with the 2026 World Cup, and no new launches have been reported.
Canada’s round-of-16 match against Morocco in Houston is scheduled for July 4 or 5. Davies’ availability off the bench remains the key variable Marsch will manage in real time depending on how the match develops.
