Amazon targets Musk’s Starlink with new satellite constellation for mobile services

Amazon is developing a satellite network aimed at mobile services, putting it on a direct collision course with Elon Musk’s Starlink, the current king of space-based internet.

Project Kuiper enters the mobile arena

Amazon’s satellite ambitions live under the banner of Project Kuiper, a constellation designed to eventually number 3,236 satellites providing broadband coverage across the globe. The initiative was first announced in 2019 as a multi-billion-dollar investment, and it has spent most of its life playing catch-up to SpaceX’s Starlink, which has been operational since roughly 2019-2020.

Until now, Kuiper’s publicly stated mission centered on fixed and portable broadband. As of late July 2026, no public announcements or regulatory filings from Amazon have outlined a mobile-focused phase for Kuiper, leaving many questions about the project’s direction.

Starlink has already been moving toward direct-to-device connectivity, with SpaceX having partnered with T-Mobile on direct-to-cell capabilities.

The crypto angle, or lack thereof

Project Kuiper has no cryptocurrency component, no blockchain integration, and no plans for a decentralized satellite governance protocol. The same is true for Starlink. No cryptocurrencies, blockchain projects, or tokens have been linked to the Kuiper initiative.

Amazon’s FCC approvals and existing launch contracts indicate a long-term commitment to satellite broadband. Whether it can close the gap with Starlink’s operational head start is the billion-dollar question. Investors should watch for partnership announcements with mobile carriers, which would signal how quickly Amazon plans to bring direct-to-device service to market.
