American Bitcoin Corp director Justin Mateen buys 306,981 shares for $1.93M after record Q2

Justin Mateen has never been shy about big bets. The Tinder co-founder turned Bitcoin mining board member dropped roughly $1.93 million on shares of American Bitcoin Corp over two days this week, a move that reads less like a casual portfolio tweak and more like a public vote of confidence in a company still finding its footing.

Mateen, who has served as an independent director of ABTC since March 2025, purchased 306,981 shares across August 5 and 6, picking up 144,543 shares at a weighted average of $6.3964 on the first day and another 162,438 shares at $6.1873 the following day. His total beneficial ownership now stands at 492,297 shares.

Buying after earnings, not before

The timing is worth a close read. The purchase came immediately after American Bitcoin Corp released its Q2 2026 earnings, a report that contained both genuinely impressive operational data and a net loss of approximately $57 million.

On the operational side, the company mined 932 BTC during the quarter, a record output for the firm. Its treasury now holds over 8,000 BTC, reflecting a deliberate mine-and-hold strategy rather than the liquidate-to-cover-costs approach many smaller miners take.

What American Bitcoin Corp actually is

American Bitcoin Corp is a relatively new entrant, formed in 2025 through a merger between Gryphon Digital Mining and a Trump family-backed entity. Eric Trump and Donald Trump Jr. are associated with the company. The firm trades on the Nasdaq under the ticker ABTC and uses infrastructure from Hut 8 to power its mining operations.

What insider buying actually signals

Mateen’s purchase has a few characteristics that make it more signal-rich than the average board member topping up their position. The scale, nearly $2 million, is not a token gesture. The timing, immediately post-earnings when the loss figure was public and the stock was priced accordingly, removes any informational advantage. And the concentration, going from a smaller position to 492,297 shares, suggests a deliberate sizing decision rather than routine accumulation.

ABTC’s Q2 record mining output of 932 BTC suggests the operational machine is running at its most productive level yet.
