Apple to build Mac mini plant in Texas as part of $600B US investment push

Apple is bringing Mac mini production to American soil for the first time, with US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick set to formally announce that the company will build a new manufacturing facility in Houston, Texas.

The Houston campus will double in size to accommodate the new production line, which is expected to begin churning out Mac minis later in 2026.

What the expansion actually includes

The Mac mini line is just one piece of a broader campus overhaul. Apple is also adding a 20,000-square-foot Advanced Manufacturing Center designed for workforce training.

AI server production at the Houston facility, which kicked off in 2025, is reportedly running ahead of schedule. The expansion will ramp up that capacity too, positioning the site as a dual-purpose hub for both consumer products and enterprise-grade AI infrastructure.

Apple expects the project to create thousands of new jobs. Texas already had a foothold in Apple’s manufacturing map: the state has been home to Mac Pro assembly for years.

The company is framing all of this under a $600 billion US investment commitment. That figure covers a sprawling set of initiatives, from chip sourcing to new supplier facilities across the country.

The chip supply chain angle

Apple is set to purchase over 100 million advanced chips from TSMC’s Arizona fabrication facility in 2026. Apple committing to buy over 100 million chips from that facility is both a vote of confidence and a financial lifeline for the project.

Commerce Secretary Lutnick has been in ongoing discussions with Apple about potentially shifting iPhone production to the US as well, though those talks haven’t directly influenced the Mac mini decision.

Why Texas, and why now

The Advanced Manufacturing Center is a tacit acknowledgment of the biggest obstacle to US-based electronics production: workforce readiness. Apple’s 20,000-square-foot training facility is designed to close that gap, at least for its own operations.
