Arsenal have completed the signing of Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa in a deal worth up to £55M, adding a proven Premier League center-back to their squad just before the 2026-27 season kicks off.

The base fee sits at £51M, with an additional £4M in potential add-ons. Konsa has signed a four-year contract with an option for a fifth year, locking him in at the Emirates through the peak of his career.

A transfer that took some convincing

Arsenal didn’t get their man on the first attempt. Or the second. The club’s initial bid of £30M was rejected, and a follow-up offer of £40M met the same fate. Villa weren’t in a rush to sell a player who had just helped them win the Europa League, which is understandable when you consider what Konsa brought to the table last season: 48 appearances across all competitions during that title-winning campaign.

The final price tag reflects both Konsa’s value to Villa and Arsenal’s determination to close the deal before their Premier League opener against Coventry on August 21, 2026. Konsa himself revealed he had been in conversations with Arsenal players about a potential move during the 2026 World Cup. That tournament turned out to be a strong audition for the 28-year-old, who started seven matches as England reached the semi-finals. With 28 caps to his name, he’s no longer a fringe international.

Why Arsenal needed this signing

Arsenal have been dealing with injuries to key defenders William Saliba and Jurrien Timber, making defensive reinforcement less of a luxury and more of a necessity. Konsa’s versatility, his ability to play across the back line, gives manager Mikel Arteta options he didn’t have before.

Since joining Villa from Brentford in 2019, Konsa has racked up 286 appearances for the club. Konsa becomes Arsenal’s fifth major signing of the current transfer window.

What Konsa leaves behind, and what he walks into

Konsa spent seven years at Villa, arriving as a promising young defender from Brentford and departing as a Europa League winner and established England international.

Konsa’s potential debut for Arsenal could come on August 31, 2026, when Arsenal travel to face Aston Villa — a 10-day turnaround from announcement to facing his former teammates.
