The world’s most important company you’ve probably never thought much about just had a very good quarter. ASML, the Dutch maker of the machines that make the chips that power everything from your phone to the latest AI clusters, has locked in substantial commitments from the biggest names in semiconductor manufacturing, including SK Hynix, TSMC, Intel, and Samsung.
The headline number comes from SK Hynix, which placed an order worth roughly $8 billion for EUV lithography tools in March 2026. That is the largest single disclosed order for mass production equipment in the company’s history, covering high-bandwidth memory and advanced DRAM production through 2027.
Why EUV machines are the chokepoint of the chip world
Think of EUV lithography as the printing press for the semiconductor age, except instead of ink and paper, you are using extreme ultraviolet light to etch circuit patterns onto silicon at scales measured in nanometers. ASML is the only company on earth that makes these machines, which puts it in a position that most monopolies would envy.
The newer generation of this technology, called High-NA EUV, pushes the resolution even further, enabling chipmakers to pack more transistors into smaller spaces. Intel has already begun production using High-NA EUV for specific advanced nodes. SK Hynix and Samsung are deploying these systems as well. TSMC, the world’s largest contract chipmaker, is taking a more measured approach, postponing broader High-NA adoption for now.
Belgian research institute Imec also secured a High-NA EUV system in March 2026, priced at $400 million. There are fewer than a dozen of these machines in existence globally.
ASML’s numbers tell the same story
ASML raised its revenue guidance for fiscal 2026 to between €43 billion and €45 billion as of July 2026. The company’s order backlog at the end of 2025 stood at €38.8 billion, a figure that reflects commitments already in place before the SK Hynix mega-order landed. ASML is responding with serious capacity expansion, planning 30% annual increases in production capacity for both EUV and deep ultraviolet tools in 2027 and 2028.
What this means for the broader semiconductor landscape
SK Hynix’s aggressive spend is particularly notable. The company has moved quickly to establish itself as the leading supplier of high-bandwidth memory for AI accelerators, and an $8 billion equipment commitment is a way of defending that position before competitors can close the gap. Samsung, a rival in both memory and logic chips, is deploying High-NA systems as well.
For Intel, the company is in the middle of a prolonged effort to rebuild its manufacturing competitiveness after falling behind TSMC on advanced nodes. Using High-NA EUV for production, rather than just R&D, is a meaningful milestone in that effort.
ASML’s capacity expansion plans also carry implications for the companies supplying components into ASML’s own manufacturing process. A 30% annual ramp requires optical systems, precision mechanics, and specialized materials at scale, creating a secondary wave of demand through the supply chain.
