Austria opened their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with a convincing 3-1 victory over Jordan at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California on June 17. Romano Schmid, an own goal from Jordan’s Yazan Alarab, and a stoppage-time penalty from Marko Arnautovic did the damage for the Europeans.
What happened on the pitch
Austria controlled the Group J contest at key moments, with Schmid opening the scoring and Alarab’s own goal extending their lead. Jordan didn’t go quietly, though. Ali Olwan netted what became a historic moment: Jordan’s first-ever goal in World Cup competition.
Arnautovic put the exclamation point on the result in the 90th minute plus 12, converting from the penalty spot to make it 3-1.
Crypto’s World Cup moment
Kraken was named the Official Crypto Exchange Supporter of the FIFA World Cup 2026 on June 9, roughly a week before the tournament kicked off. The exchange has launched initiatives targeting fans across North America and Europe, the two regions hosting this expanded 48-team tournament.
Match coverage has highlighted partnerships involving Chiliz (CHZ) and Chainlink (LINK). Chiliz powers fan token ecosystems, letting supporters of various clubs buy governance-adjacent tokens tied to their favorite teams. Chainlink provides the decentralized oracle infrastructure that could underpin everything from tokenized ticketing to real-time data feeds for sports betting protocols.
A Solana-based token named after Arnautovic has entered circulation, boasting a supply near 1 billion tokens.
What this means for crypto investors
Chiliz stands to gain the most from a fan engagement perspective. The project has built its entire business model around sports tokenization, and there is no bigger sports event on the planet than the World Cup.
For Kraken, the sponsorship play is about user acquisition. Crypto.com bought naming rights to the former Staples Center. FTX famously sponsored the Miami Heat’s arena before its spectacular collapse. Kraken’s World Cup partnership is the latest entry in this tradition.
The meme token situation around Arnautovic is worth monitoring only as a sentiment indicator. A near-billion token supply on a Solana meme coin is not exactly screaming scarcity-driven value.
