Bain Capital takes $74M equity stake in RQD Clearing to fuel global expansion and tokenization push

Bain Capital Tech Opportunities is putting $74 million behind RQD* Clearing, the stock and options intermediary that has quietly built itself into a real player in US equities clearing. The minority growth equity investment, announced on August 27, positions the firm to scale globally and push deeper into digital asset custody and tokenization.

Roughly $66 million of that total comes directly from Bain, with additional participation from ABN AMRO Clearing Bank and Nyca Partners. Existing investors Gentree Fund and Belvedere Strategic Capital also joined the round. For a company that spun out of Volant Securities just seven years ago, the backing represents a meaningful endorsement from some of the most sophisticated names in financial infrastructure investing.

A clearing firm punching above its weight

RQD* has been building proprietary, real-time clearing and custody infrastructure for broker-dealers and registered investment advisors. The numbers suggest the approach is working.

Year-to-date in 2026, the firm has processed more than 515 million equity transactions valued at nearly $2 trillion. On the options side, it has handled approximately 64.8 million contracts carrying a notional value of around $3.93 trillion.

That volume translates to roughly 2.4% of US National Market System equity trading.

CEO Michael Sanocki has framed the investment as validation that RQD*’s platform can serve as a credible modern alternative to legacy clearing systems. The firm was founded around 2019 with a particular focus on options markets.

Where the money goes: global expansion and digital assets

The $74 million will be deployed across three priorities. First, geographic expansion into North America beyond the US, along with Asia and the Middle East. Second, continued upgrades to the firm’s proprietary technology stack. Third, building out capabilities in digital asset custody and tokenization.

The participation of ABN AMRO Clearing Bank in the funding round is notable in its own right. ABN AMRO’s clearing arm is one of the largest in Europe, and its investment in RQD* could signal interest in cross-border clearing partnerships as the firm expands internationally.

Nyca Partners is a fintech-focused venture firm co-founded by former New York Fed president Bill Dudley.

The competitive landscape is shifting

The US equities market completed its transition to T+1 settlement in 2024, cutting the standard settlement window from two business days to one.
