Base, the Ethereum Layer 2 network built by Coinbase, is hosting its inaugural Global Community Call on July 31. The event promises updates from the Base team, interviews with builders, and spotlights on projects across the ecosystem.
What we know about the call
The session is scheduled for 8:00 AM PT, which translates to 11:00 AM EST, 3:00 PM GMT, and 8:30 PM IST.
The format will include three main components: insights from the core Base team, interviews with key builders in the ecosystem, and highlights of emerging projects. The announcement dropped on July 27 via Base’s official account on X. No specific speakers have been named yet, and the detailed agenda remains unpublished.
The token-shaped elephant in the room
Base founder Jesse Pollak first disclosed during the BaseCamp event in September 2025 that the team was exploring a native network token. Pollak has recently stepped back from leading the Base App to focus entirely on positioning Base as critical infrastructure for global financial transactions.
Base’s bigger restructuring play
The community call arrives during a significant operational pivot for the network. Base underwent a reorganization in July 2026 designed to sharpen its focus on three specific areas: payments, trading, and AI infrastructure.
Since launching its mainnet in 2023 as a developer-friendly, low-cost Ethereum Layer 2 solution, Base has climbed into the top tier of L2 networks by user activity and developer adoption.
What this means for investors
Networks like Arbitrum and Optimism launched their tokens to drive user engagement and governance participation. Base has so far competed without that tool.
A token launch would immediately invite regulatory scrutiny, especially given Coinbase’s ongoing complicated relationship with US regulators.
Investors should watch the July 31 call for three specific signals: any concrete timeline or mechanism details for a token launch, announcements of strategic partnerships in payments or AI, and the overall tone around governance.
