Changpeng Zhao, the founder of Binance and one of the most influential figures in digital assets, posted on X on September 2 that speculative capital is migrating back into crypto after a prolonged flirtation with the artificial intelligence sector. His term for it: “hot money.”
Earlier in 2026, AI-related investments siphoned significant speculative interest away from crypto, applying downward pressure on token prices. Now, according to CZ, the tide is turning.
The AI-to-crypto capital rotation
CZ’s thesis is straightforward. Speculative capital doesn’t disappear. It moves. And after chasing AI narratives through much of 2026, some of that money is finding its way back to digital assets.
He framed this as a normal part of market behavior rather than a signal that a massive rally is imminent. CZ specifically cautioned that “tourist money,” as he characterized it, tends to chase whatever narrative is hottest at any given moment, and its loyalty to crypto shouldn’t be assumed.
CZ also made a broader philosophical point about capital flows. He noted that the persistent demand for financial resources exists across both human actors and AI systems, suggesting that the underlying need for money transcends any single investment trend.
What the data says about Bitcoin’s positioning
Glassnode’s on-chain analysis has identified resistance levels for Bitcoin in the $83,000 to $86,000 range. That’s the zone where selling pressure has historically intensified, making it a key battleground for bulls trying to push prices higher.
River Research has projected potential Bitcoin price targets ranging from $250,000 to $840,000 over the next five years, based on various inflow scenarios. The projections hinge on the magnitude and consistency of capital flowing into Bitcoin, which makes CZ’s observation about returning speculative interest particularly relevant.
The traditional four-year market cycle that has historically characterized crypto performance also factors into this analysis, and geopolitical tensions have applied their own pressure on crypto markets throughout 2026.
CZ’s evolving role in crypto
CZ’s commentary comes from a very different perch than it did a few years ago. He stepped down as Binance’s CEO in November 2023 as part of a settlement with US regulators. He was subsequently pardoned by former President Trump in 2025.
Since leaving the top job, CZ has pivoted to advisory roles, investments through YZi Labs, and educational initiatives within the crypto space. Binance itself has continued to grow under its current management team, claiming over 300 million users and reporting trading volumes totaling $34 trillion in a recent annual report.
