Bitcoin outperforms stocks and gold, approaches $80,000

Bitcoin is having the kind of summer that makes stock and gold investors quietly reconsider their portfolio allocations. Over the past six months, the largest cryptocurrency has posted gains of roughly 16% to 22%, nearly doubling the S&P 500’s approximately 12% return over the same stretch and leaving gold, which fell about 11%, in the rearview mirror entirely.

As of late August 2026, Bitcoin is trading in a range of $76,000 to $79,000, putting the psychologically significant $80,000 level close enough to taste. For an asset that started the year near $87,500 and touched approximately $98,000 in January before a painful retreat, the current push feels less like a moonshot and more like a measured comeback tour.

The numbers behind the rally

Bitcoin didn’t take a straight line to the high $70,000s. After peaking near $98,000 in January, the price experienced notable pullbacks through the spring. The recent surge past $70,000 in mid-August rekindled enthusiasm that had gone dormant during months of sideways and downward price action.

That renewed enthusiasm is showing up clearly in prediction markets. On Polymarket, the odds of Bitcoin reaching $80,000 by December 31, 2026, have climbed to 57%. That figure nearly doubled following the latest price jump.

Why $80,000 matters more than you think

A clean break above $80,000 would signal that Bitcoin has recovered from its post-January correction and re-entered the territory where conversations about new all-time highs become plausible again. The January peak near $98,000 would become the next reference point.

The 57% odds on Polymarket suggest that a slim majority of prediction market participants believe this scenario plays out before year-end, a far cry from the skepticism that prevailed during Bitcoin’s spring retreat.

What’s driving the rotation

Bitcoin’s outperformance relative to both equities and gold points to a broader shift in how investors are thinking about asset allocation. When stocks are delivering decent but unspectacular returns and gold is actively losing value, capital tends to flow toward whatever is generating the best risk-adjusted returns.

For now, the data tells a straightforward story. Bitcoin is outperforming the two asset classes most commonly cited as alternatives to it, and it’s doing so at a moment when investors are actively searching for growth. Whether the $80,000 level holds or gives way will likely set the tone for how the rest of 2026 unfolds across the entire digital asset landscape.
