Borussia Dortmund ends pursuit of Said El Mala after €50m bid rejected

Borussia Dortmund wanted Said El Mala. They made their move, Köln said no, and now BVB is moving on. Lars Ricken, the club’s managing director for sport, confirmed on August 14 that Dortmund would not be submitting any further offers for the 19-year-old winger, drawing a firm line under one of the summer’s more compelling transfer sagas in the Bundesliga.

How the pursuit unraveled

Dortmund’s interest in El Mala was genuine and persistent. BVB made multiple approaches for the teenager across the summer window, with negotiations intensifying in mid-August 2026.

Their final offer was reported to be in the region of €50 million, potentially rising with add-ons, a significant sum for a player who only recently turned 19. Köln rejected it anyway.

El Mala is contracted at the Rheinenergie Stadion until June 2030, which gives the club every incentive to hold firm.

Ricken’s announcement ended any remaining ambiguity. Dortmund will not return with a revised offer this summer.

Who is Said El Mala?

El Mala was born on August 26, 2006, which means he is completing his teenage years while being valued at figures that most professional footballers never see in their careers. He plays primarily as a left winger but can operate in an attacking midfield role.

He came through the youth system at Borussia Mönchengladbach before a loan spell at Viktoria Köln sharpened him for senior football. That groundwork paid off when he broke into 1. FC Köln’s first team and started producing at Bundesliga level during the 2025-26 season.

The performances were enough to earn him caps with the Germany Under-21 national team.

What this means for both clubs

For Köln, turning down Dortmund is a statement of intent. El Mala is contracted until June 2030, giving the club legal protection as he continues his upward trajectory.

El Mala stays at Köln with his valuation effectively reset upward by the public nature of Dortmund’s interest. A rejected €50 million bid is not bad for a player’s market standing heading into the next window.
