Brighton defeats Arsenal 3-0, ends Gunners’ unbeaten run in emphatic fashion

Brighton & Hove Albion just did what no other Premier League side managed in four attempts this season: beat Arsenal. And they didn’t just edge past the Gunners with a scrappy late winner. They dismantled them 3-0 at the American Express Stadium on September 19, making it look almost routine in the process.

The result snapped Arsenal’s perfect 4-0-0 start to the 2026/27 campaign and, with it, any near-term talk of a historic unbeaten run that would have approached a 123-year club milestone.

How Brighton took Arsenal apart

The first half hour was competitive but largely uneventful. Then Pascal Groß changed the complexion of the match in the 31st minute, putting Brighton ahead and forcing Arsenal into an unfamiliar position for the young season: chasing the game.

Things got worse before the halftime whistle. Charalampos Kostoulas, just 19 years old, doubled the lead right at the stroke of 45 minutes.

Chema Andrés converted from a corner in the 57th minute for his first-ever Premier League goal, and the contest was effectively over. Brighton outshot and outworked the Gunners across the pitch, winning the set-piece battle decisively.

Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya had little chance on any of the three goals. Bukayo Saka and Kai Havertz were largely neutralized by Brighton’s organized defensive shape.

Brighton’s fortress against champions

Brighton have now won three consecutive home Premier League matches against the reigning champions. Previous victims include Manchester City and Liverpool, both dispatched at the Amex in earlier seasons.

The corner that led to Andrés’ goal was a well-rehearsed routine executed against a team that prides itself on defensive organization.

What this means for the title race

Arsenal entered the weekend with maximum points from their first four matches. A 3-0 loss doesn’t erase the good work, but it does puncture the aura of invincibility that was forming around Mikel Arteta’s squad.

Manchester City now sit atop the table after four wins. Arsenal conceded just a handful of goals in their opening four matches, and then shipped three in a single afternoon.
