Some players take months to win over a new fanbase. Carlos Espí needed about 90 minutes.
The 21-year-old Spanish forward, who joined Real Madrid from Levante on July 30 for €25 million, has already established himself as the club’s resident stoppage-time savior. Twice this season, Espí has found the net in the dying moments to rescue all three points for Los Blancos, first against Espanyol on his LaLiga debut and then against Elche barely three weeks later.
The debut that wrote its own script
On August 22, Espí made his first competitive appearance for Real Madrid in a home fixture against Espanyol. The match also carried additional weight as the first competitive outing of José Mourinho’s second stint as head coach, following his return to the club in June.
His late strike sealed a 2-1 victory, the kind of debut goal that instantly earns a player cult-hero status.
Standing at 1.94 meters, Espí is built like a classic target man. That aerial presence was precisely the profile Madrid identified when they triggered his release clause over the summer.
Lightning strikes twice against Elche
On September 15, Real Madrid hosted Elche in what should have been a comfortable afternoon. Madrid raced to a 2-0 lead before Elche clawed their way back to 2-2.
Espí scored in the 91st minute to complete a 3-2 win. Two last-minute winners in his first month at the club is the sort of streak that either cements a legacy or becomes the high point of a very short highlight reel.
From Levante breakout to Bernabéu spotlight
Espí’s trajectory to one of the world’s biggest clubs was built on a breakout campaign at Levante. During the 2025-26 season, he scored 11 goals and earned recognition as LaLiga’s best under-23 player. Across his senior career with the Valencia-based club, he accumulated 20 goals in 66 appearances.
The €25 million fee matched Espí’s release clause exactly, meaning Levante had no leverage to negotiate a higher price. At nearly two meters tall, Espí offers a direct, physical dimension that complements the technical and pace-oriented forwards typically associated with the club.
The Mourinho connection adds another layer. The Portuguese manager, known for pragmatic football and a fondness for players who can change games in isolated moments, returned to the club in June 2026 just before Espí’s debut.
What the early returns suggest
Madrid needed a stoppage-time goal to beat Espanyol, and they surrendered a two-goal lead against Elche before Espí bailed them out. For opposing defenses, the scouting report is already clear: his height and timing in the box make him a constant threat on set pieces and late crosses in the final minutes.
