Chelsea seeks to strengthen centre-back position amid Fofana scrutiny

1 hour ago 13

Chelsea is in the market for a new centre-back, looking to find the right partner for Levi Colwill as the club turns its attention to shoring up a defense that has been defined as much by injury reports as by on-pitch performances.

Wesley Fofana, the French defender who arrived from Leicester City for up to £75 million in August 2022, is not going anywhere. Despite persistent questions about his fitness and availability, Chelsea considers him unlikely to be sold, a stance reinforced by Fofana’s own apparent commitment to the club.

Fofana’s complicated tenure at Stamford Bridge

The 2025/26 season was actually a relative bright spot. He managed 38 appearances, 31 of which were starts, a workload that would have seemed optimistic given his history.

But the injury bug bit again. Fofana underwent hamstring surgery in April 2025, the latest in a series of setbacks that have dogged his Chelsea career.

Reports from May 2026 indicate that Barcelona expressed interest, which is the kind of attention that tends to accelerate transfer speculation. Fofana, though, has shown no intention of leaving. Chelsea, for its part, appears content to keep the asset and work around the availability concerns rather than cut its losses at what would almost certainly be a discount.

The search for Colwill’s partner

Levi Colwill has emerged as the defender Chelsea wants to build around, and the club’s transfer strategy is now oriented around finding someone who complements his profile.

Chelsea held discussions with Rennes defender Jérémy Jacquet, going as far as agreeing personal terms with the player back in January 2026. That deal stalled, however, because the two clubs could not settle on a transfer fee.

What this means for Chelsea’s defensive outlook

Chelsea’s decision to target a new centre-back while retaining Fofana suggests a belt-and-suspenders approach: sign someone who can start alongside Colwill, and keep Fofana as either competition for that spot or as high-quality depth.

The Fofana situation is worth watching for a different reason entirely. If he can stay fit, Chelsea suddenly has an embarrassment of riches at centre-back. If the injuries continue, the club is left carrying an expensive player who cannot reliably contribute, with a new signing expected to fill the gap. Barcelona’s interest suggests the broader market still sees value in the player, which at least gives Chelsea a fallback if the situation changes.
