Chelsea set to sign left back Pep Chavarría as deal nears completion

Chelsea has agreed personal terms with Spanish left back Pep Chavarría, who is expected to travel to London imminently for a medical and to finalize a move from Rayo Vallecano. The deal, valued at approximately £25-30 million including add-ons, caps off weeks of negotiations that at times looked anything but straightforward.

The deal structure and what it took to get here

Chavarría, 28, plays left back for La Liga side Rayo Vallecano. Chelsea’s initial approach reportedly came in below €15 million, a figure Rayo rejected without much deliberation.

That’s because Rayo had a number they liked better: a £42.4 million release clause baked into Chavarría’s contract. Chelsea clearly preferred not to pay it.

What followed was a multi-week negotiation that sources describe as complicated, partly because other clubs, including Bayer Leverkusen, were circling with competing interest. The final framework landed between £25-30 million with performance-based add-ons, well below the release clause but roughly double Chelsea’s opening bid.

Why Chelsea needs a left back now

The signing follows the departure of Marc Cucurella, which left a glaring hole in Chelsea’s defensive setup under manager Xabi Alonso.

The reported timeline puts the final confirmation around August 1-2, 2026, which would give Chavarría several weeks of preseason integration before the Premier League kicks off.

Competing interest from Bayer Leverkusen also tells a story about market positioning. When Bundesliga clubs with strong analytics operations are bidding on the same player, it typically validates the scouting thesis. Chelsea winning that particular tug of war suggests the club’s recruitment team and Leverkusen’s data department were reading the same spreadsheet.

If the medical goes as expected, an official announcement could land within days.
