Chelsea signs Marco Palestra from Atalanta on six-year deal

Chelsea has completed the signing of Marco Palestra from Atalanta in a deal worth approximately €55 million, locking down the 21-year-old Italian right-back on a contract running through June 2032. The deal includes an option to extend through 2033.

The transfer was finalized in late June 2026 after Palestra completed his medical examinations in London. All documents between the two clubs have been signed, making this the first significant addition under manager Xabi Alonso’s tenure at Stamford Bridge.

What Chelsea is getting

Palestra spent the 2025-26 season on loan at Cagliari, where he turned heads with a combination of defensive solidity and attacking flair that made him one of Serie A’s most talked-about young fullbacks. His dribbling from the right flank drew particular praise, the kind of profile that fits the modern demand for fullbacks who function more like wide playmakers than traditional defenders.

He’s already earned two caps for Italy at senior international level.

The total cost of the deal could climb to between €55-60 million when add-ons are factored in.

Chelsea beat out Inter Milan to secure Palestra’s signature. Inter had initially appeared to be frontrunners in the race.

Alonso’s blueprint takes shape

This is Xabi Alonso’s first signing as Chelsea manager. Alonso, who built his managerial reputation on tactical discipline and structured buildup play during his time at Bayer Leverkusen, clearly sees Palestra as a foundational piece. A right-back who can carry the ball forward and contribute in the final third fits neatly into a system that demands technical quality across every position on the pitch.

Chelsea’s transfer strategy over the past few years has been defined by volume and youth. The club has assembled a squad heavy on young talent locked into long-term contracts. Palestra’s six-year deal with an optional seventh year fits that template precisely.

What this means for investors and the broader market

Chelsea, owned by the Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital consortium, has been one of the most aggressive spenders in global football since the ownership change. The €55 million price tag for a 21-year-old with two international caps and one impressive loan season is a bet on potential appreciation.

For Atalanta, the sale represents a significant windfall for a club that has built its model around developing and selling talent at a profit. Palestra came through their academy system and is now leaving for roughly the kind of fee that funds multiple shrewd replacements in the Italian market.
