Chelsea signs Marco Palestra to six-year contract

Chelsea has officially landed Marco Palestra, the 21-year-old Italian right-back, on a six-year contract running through June 2032 with an option to extend through 2033. The deal, worth approximately €55 million (£47 million or $62 million), represents the first signing under new head coach Xabi Alonso.

Palestra completed his medical and put pen to paper after Chelsea successfully outmaneuvered Inter Milan for his signature.

What Chelsea is getting

Palestra spent the 2025-26 season on loan at Cagliari from Atalanta, and he didn’t exactly fly under the radar. Across 37 appearances, the right-back recorded 1 goal and 4 assists.

He was named Serie A defender of the year. He also won the Frecciarossa award for top speed in Serie A.

Standing 1.86 meters tall (6 feet 1 inch), Palestra offers the physical profile of a modern wing-back who can operate effectively on both sides of the ball. Born on March 3, 2005, he turns 22 next year.

The Xabi Alonso factor

Alonso, who earned his managerial reputation through tactically sophisticated football, clearly views the right-back/wing-back position as a priority. In the systems Alonso has favored, the wide defenders are essentially the engine room of build-up play and width in attack.

The €55 million fee is significant but not outrageous by current Premier League standards. For a 21-year-old who just won Serie A’s top defensive honor, the price sits in that sweet spot where clubs can justify the spend based on both current ability and future resale value.

What this means for Chelsea’s squad

The six-year contract length, with the option for a seventh, is consistent with Chelsea’s broader approach of locking young players into long-term deals.

The fact that Chelsea beat Inter Milan to the signing is worth noting. Inter, a club that has been one of the shrewdest operators in European football over the past few years, clearly rated Palestra highly enough to compete for him.
