Chelsea trusts Jorrel Hato as key part of squad planning

Chelsea have placed a significant bet on Jorrel Hato. The 20-year-old Dutch defender, signed from Ajax for an initial £35.5 million plus add-ons, has become a cornerstone of the club’s defensive planning under manager Enzo Maresca.

The club isn’t stopping there. Chelsea are actively seeking one more versatile signing to complement Hato, reinforcing a squad-building philosophy that prioritizes tactical flexibility over pure star power.

The Hato blueprint

Hato’s transfer was finalized on August 3, 2025, bringing one of European football’s most promising young defenders to Stamford Bridge. His contract runs until June 2032, a seven-year commitment that tells you everything about how Chelsea view his trajectory.

Born on March 7, 2006, Hato is still just 20 years old. Yet he’s already a Netherlands international capable of operating as both a centre-back and a left-back.

Assigned the number 21 shirt, Hato has wasted little time making his mark in west London. His first goal for the club came during a 5-1 FA Cup demolition of Charlton Athletic on January 10, 2026.

His ball-progression abilities make him particularly suited to Maresca’s system. Maresca’s tactical approach requires defenders who can invert into midfield, fullbacks who can tuck inside, and an overall fluidity that rigid position-specific players cannot provide.

The £35.5 million initial fee looks increasingly reasonable when you consider the dual-position value Hato provides. Add-ons could push the total higher, but for a player contracted through 2032, the per-season cost of the transfer is spread across seven years.
