A humanoid robot that walks, talks, and assists with tasks used to cost as much as a luxury car. Chinese manufacturers are working hard to change that math, with Unitree Robotics launching its R1 model at 39,900 yuan, roughly $5,900, in July 2025.
How cheap is cheap, exactly
To understand how significant the $6,000 threshold is, consider that earlier Unitree models carried price tags between $13,500 and $16,000. The R1 cuts that by more than half.
Then there is Noetix Robotics, which launched its Bumi model at ¥9,998, approximately $1,380, in late 2025. The Bumi reportedly sold quickly after listing on JD.com, suggesting pent-up demand at price points that developers and educators can actually justify.
The R1 is not a toy. It ships with 26 joints and multimodal AI capabilities, meaning it can process visual, audio, and text inputs simultaneously.
One reason Chinese manufacturers can offer these numbers: over 90% of core components in some of their humanoid robots are sourced domestically. Localized supply chains remove the premium that comes with importing precision parts.
The volume story behind the price story
In 2025, Chinese manufacturers shipped over 14,000 humanoid robots, far outpacing Western counterparts. Unitree and AGIBot each shipped over 5,000 units that year, together accounting for the bulk of global humanoid robot deliveries.
Unitree is also pursuing a public listing and has begun selling internationally through AliExpress as of 2026.
The target buyers for these early models are primarily developers, researchers, and educators rather than households. A $5,900 robot is still a significant purchase for most consumers, but it is within reach for a university lab, a startup building robotics software, or a mid-sized company experimenting with automation.
What this means for the global robotics race
The R1’s inclusion of multimodal AI at its launch price suggests Chinese manufacturers are not planning to charge extra for intelligence, the way early smartphone makers eventually bundled cameras and GPS into base models rather than selling them as add-ons.
The risks are real, though. Early-stage humanoid robots, regardless of origin, have a track record of impressive demos followed by limited real-world utility. A $1,380 robot that mostly sits on a shelf is still $1,380 wasted.
The 14,000 units shipped in 2025 represent 14,000 real-world environments generating feedback that lab-based development cannot replicate.
