Cloud9 shakes up VALORANT coaching staff amid brutal losing streak, raising questions about esports org valuations

Cloud9, one of the most recognizable brands in competitive gaming and a company with direct ties to the crypto industry through its Blockchain.com partnership, just hit the reset button on its VALORANT coaching staff. The organization announced on July 28 that it would bench head coach Immi, real name Ian Harding, and hand the reins to assistant coach Wyatt “Veer” Blevins for the remainder of 2026.

The move comes after Cloud9 posted a 5-11 record this season, including six consecutive losses.

What happened and why it matters beyond gaming

Veer, whose real name is Wyatt Blevins, only joined Cloud9 as an assistant coach in April 2026. Three months later, he’s running the show. His first match at the helm is scheduled for July 31 against LOUD in the VALORANT Champions Tour Americas Stage 2.

The decision to promote from within rather than pursue an external hire tells a specific story. Promoting an assistant who has been with the team for barely a quarter suggests urgency over deliberation.

The crypto connection: Cloud9 and Blockchain.com

Cloud9 previously partnered with Blockchain.com, one of the longest-running cryptocurrency exchange and wallet providers in the industry. That partnership placed crypto branding squarely in front of Cloud9’s massive audience, a demographic that skews young, tech-savvy, and disproportionately interested in digital assets.

The broader esports valuation question

The decision to bench Immi and promote Veer is fundamentally a bet that the roster’s talent isn’t the problem. Coaching changes in esports, much like in traditional sports, are often the first lever that management pulls when results deteriorate. It’s cheaper than rebuilding a roster, faster than a full organizational overhaul, and it sends a signal to players and fans that the front office is taking action.

Veer inherits a team that has won fewer than one in three of its matches this season. His debut against LOUD, a Brazilian powerhouse in the VCT Americas league, is scheduled for July 31.
