Coinbase acknowledges distance from crypto-native users, plans to rebuild trust with Base App relaunch

The vehicle for reconciliation is the newly relaunched Base App, which replaces the old Coinbase Wallet with something far more ambitious: an integrated platform combining trading, earning, social features, and discovery tools.

What the Base App actually does

The Base App launched in April 2026 as what Coinbase is calling an “everything app” for onchain activity. Users get real-time trading capabilities, communication tools, and access to DeFi and social onchain features, all bundled into a single self-custody interface.

Users holding USDC in their self-custody wallets within the Base App can earn up to 3.35% APY in rewards, with no lockups and remaining liquid and accessible.

Coinbase One subscribers get free gas fees and up to $10 per month in gas sponsorships for onchain transactions.

The app is built on Base, Coinbase’s Layer 2 network that runs on Ethereum using the OP Stack.

Why Coinbase is course-correcting now

The Base App relaunch came directly from feedback collected from onchain participants. Coinbase has said that user input from crypto-native communities is now prioritized in driving product development.

What this means for investors and the broader market

For USDC specifically, the 3.35% APY incentive could drive meaningful demand. Users who might otherwise park stablecoins on competing platforms or in DeFi lending protocols now have a reason to keep those assets within Coinbase’s orbit.

Base is, at the end of the day, a Coinbase-controlled network. The company positions it as a neutral platform, but critics have consistently pointed out that a Layer 2 operated by a single publicly traded company carries different risk profiles than a truly decentralized alternative.

Coinbase has a mixed track record with product launches outside its core exchange business. The original Coinbase Wallet never captured meaningful market share among power users, and the company’s NFT marketplace was quietly shelved after failing to gain traction.
