- States accuse Trump of breaching privacy with D.O.G.E access.
- Concerns grow over the security risks tied to D.O.G.E’s operations.
- Legal battle intensifies as unions join lawsuit over data sharing.
The launch of Elon Musk’s D.O.G.E unit faces fierce legal opposition as 19 states file suit against President Trump, claiming the initiative violated privacy rights by granting unlawful access to vital government data and systems.
States Sue President Trump over D.O.G.E’s Unauthorized Data Access
A lawsuit has been filed by 19 states against President Donald Trump and his Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. The suit accuses them of allowing Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (D.O.G.E) access to sensitive government data without proper authorization. The lawsuit claims this decision violates privacy protections and lacks the necessary security measures.

The states, led by Democratic attorneys general from New York and California, argue that Trump and Bessent allowed Musk’s team unlimited access to the Treasury’s Bureau of Fiscal Services (BFS). This department is tasked to manage federal payments like Social Security and Medicare funds. The lawsuit argues that no public announcement or explanation was made to support the decision to grant this access.
Attorney General Letitia James of New York, who leads the legal charge, expressed concerns about the administration’s actions. She emphasized that the President cannot share private information without proper oversight or authorization. The states demand that the court issue a restraining order to prevent D.O.GE from further access to the Treasury data.
Trump’s Administration Dismiss Case
White House representatives have dismissed the lawsuit, calling it a political move by Democrats. They argue that D.O.G.E’s mission to reduce federal expenditure and fraud is a widely accepted policy. Harrison Fields, the principal deputy press secretary, defended the initiative, stating that eliminating inefficiencies is not a crime.
Legal experts, however, believe the lawsuit could have merit under the Administrative Procedures Act. The states accuse Trump and Bessent of making decisions that could be seen as an overstep of executive authority. The suit could prompt the court to D.O.G.E’s access to sensitive Treasury data.
Meanwhile, Bessent and other officials insist that the access was limited to review and identification of inefficiencies in government spending.
Trump’s Initiative Faces Increased Scrutiny
Moreover, Senate Democrats have also raised concerns further adding to the controversy around D.O.G.E. Senator Ron Wyden and others have requested transparency about how Musk’s team was vetted. The senators question whether proper security checks were conducted before granting access to vital government systems.
Furthermore, the unions of federal workers have also filed a lawsuit over D.O.G.E’s unauthorized access to personal information. A federal judge recently imposed restrictions on the group’s access as the case progresses.
In addition to the concerns, a scandal that involved a D.O.G.E team member, Edward Coristine, has raised concerns about vetting procedures. Coristine was fired from a cybersecurity firm for allegedly leaking sensitive data. His past actions have fueled the alarm over Musk’s team’s qualifications and security protocols.
The outcome of the case is likely to have long-term implications for Musk’s involvement with government data.
