France’s head coach Didier Deschamps went public this month with a full-throated defense of captain Kylian Mbappé, calling him a “real leader” and dismissing criticism of the forward’s commitment as disconnected from reality.
What Deschamps actually said
Speaking in mid-June 2026 as France prepares for the FIFA World Cup, Deschamps pushed back hard against the narrative that Mbappé is selfish or disengaged. He described the forward as a mature presence who actively mentors younger squad members.
The coach had already laid groundwork for this defense back in February 2026, when he publicly stated that Mbappé “acts like a true captain.” Younger players in the squad reportedly “adore” him, according to Deschamps.
Mbappé inherited the armband following a generational turnover after the 2022 World Cup. Hugo Lloris retired. So did Olivier Giroud, Raphaël Varane, and Antoine Griezmann. That left Mbappé as the de facto standard-bearer for French football.
Deschamps, who has coached France since 2012 and led the team to the 2018 World Cup title and a runner-up finish in 2022, plans to step down after the 2026 tournament concludes. His public backing of Mbappé reads partly as legacy management, ensuring the captain’s authority is cemented before the next coaching era begins.
