Nilson Angulo just etched his name into Ecuadorian football history. The 22-year-old forward scored Ecuador’s first goal of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in their crucial Group E match against Germany on June 25 at MetLife Stadium.
A tournament of frustration, then a breakthrough
Ecuador’s World Cup campaign had been, to put it charitably, underwhelming before Angulo’s strike. Their opener against Côte d’Ivoire on June 15 ended in a 1-0 loss. Five days later, they managed only a goalless draw against Curaçao.
Two matches, zero goals. That was the story heading into the Germany game.
Who is Nilson Angulo?
Born on June 19, 2003, Angulo turned 22 just six days before his defining World Cup moment. He is currently on loan at Sunderland AFC in England’s Championship, having joined in the January 2026 transfer window from Belgian club Anderlecht.
Angulo was named to Ecuador’s squad on or around June 1, 2026, and made his World Cup debut during the tournament. With 16 senior caps for Ecuador entering the competition, he was not one of the squad’s most experienced internationals.
The goal against Germany was his second at international level.
Group E dynamics and what’s at stake
Heading into the Germany match, Ecuador’s situation was precarious. One point from two games left them needing a result against the Germans to have any realistic chance of advancing to the knockout rounds.
For Angulo personally, the trajectory from Belgian football to an English Championship loan to a World Cup goal against Germany represents a rapid ascent. Sunderland fans will be watching closely, and so will Anderlecht, who still hold his parent contract.
