Fairshake, the crypto industry’s most powerful political weapon, is taking a surprisingly light touch in Massachusetts. The super PAC has logged just $189,000 in independent expenditures supporting Democratic Rep. Jake Auchincloss ahead of the state’s September 1, 2026 primary, a figure that looks almost quaint compared to its spending habits elsewhere.
For a PAC that has reportedly collected $193 million for the 2026 election cycle, dropping less than $200K on a single race is the political equivalent of leaving a modest tip. In other competitive contests this cycle, Fairshake has deployed up to $12 million per race.
Why Massachusetts, and why so little
The MA-4 congressional district primary pits Auchincloss, a sitting congressman with a substantial war chest, against challenger Jason Poulos. Auchincloss has raised over $3.63 million and sits on approximately $7.41 million in cash on hand as of mid-2026. Poulos, by contrast, has raised somewhere between $41,000 and $68,000.
Poulos has made his opposition to outside crypto-industry spending a centerpiece of his campaign, rejecting support from PACs linked to the digital asset sector. That positioning creates an interesting dynamic: Fairshake’s involvement, even at a relatively low level, gives Poulos a talking point about corporate influence in the race.
Meanwhile, Protect Progress, a Fairshake affiliate, has sent out mailers that use Auchincloss’s own campaign messaging against Poulos.
Fairshake’s bigger picture
The PAC, backed by Coinbase, Ripple Labs, and Andreessen Horowitz, has consistently adopted a strategy of selective investment, concentrating firepower on races where the outcome is genuinely in doubt and where a pro-crypto candidate needs a financial lifeline to stay competitive.
In the 2024 cycle, Fairshake and its affiliated PACs raised over $260 million and spent nearly $196 million. Those numbers made it one of the most active super PACs in American politics. The 2026 cycle appears to be following a similar pattern, with the PAC amassing a $193 million war chest.
With a September 1 primary in MA-4 and the general election set for November 3, 2026, the PAC still has months to deploy the vast majority of its funds in higher-stakes contests.
