FC Barcelona leads Valencia 2-0 at half-time with goals from Yamal and Lopez

FC Barcelona went into the break with a comfortable 2-0 lead over Valencia at Mestalla Stadium, with teenage sensation Lamine Yamal and midfielder Fermín López doing the damage inside the opening 22 minutes. The result, if it holds, would extend Barcelona’s perfect start to the 2026/27 La Liga season to four wins from four matches.

Yamal needed just five minutes to open the scoring, converting from a Fermín López assist. López then scored himself in the 21st minute after Anthony Gordon played him in. Yamal nearly had a brace early on, but VAR intervened to disallow a second goal for offside shortly after his opener.

Barcelona’s possession stranglehold

The statistics at half-time told a story of near-total dominance. Barcelona controlled roughly 78-79% of possession. They managed between six and seven shots, putting four of those on target.

Valencia mustered just one or two shots, with only one finding its way on target.

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick made one notable tactical adjustment before the break, bringing on Eric García to replace Jules Koundé around the 29th minute. No injury was reported for Koundé.

A tale of two early-season trajectories

Barcelona entered Matchweek 4 unbeaten and sitting at the top of La Liga, having won all three of their previous matches with 9 to 10 points. Their goal difference already stood between +10 and +12.

Valencia’s start has been the polar opposite. Heading into this fixture, they had managed a single point from their opening matches, a record that placed them near the foot of the table.

Barcelona’s starting eleven included Raphinha wearing the captain’s armband, Pedri in midfield alongside López, Cubarsí in defence, Joan García in goal, and Anthony Gordon in attack. Valencia lined up with Stole Dimitrievski between the posts and Mouctar Diakhaby captaining the side, with Arnaut Danjuma providing some attacking threat.

Should Barcelona close this out, they would move to 12 or 13 points from four matches.
