Jesse Bisiwu’s Barcelona career has been a series of frustrating speed bumps, and the latest one came with a stretcher. The 18-year-old Belgian winger was carried off the pitch during the Copa Catalunya final after suffering a right ankle injury, less than 10 minutes into the match.

The incident occurred at Nova Creu Alta on September 2, with Bisiwu going down after a challenge from Centre d’Esports Sabadell’s Gonzalo Ávila. He was replaced by Shane Kluivert, with the score still locked at 0-0. Barcelona now faces an anxious wait for medical results that will determine just how long their summer investment will be sidelined.

A signing that hasn’t gone to plan

Barcelona completed the signing of Bisiwu from Club Brugge on July 31 for a reported €8.5 million, plus a 20% sell-on clause. His contract runs through June 30, 2031, a deal that signaled serious long-term intent from the Catalan club.

Bisiwu has been unable to make his competitive first-team debut due to bureaucratic complications with his registration. Instead, the 6’1″ left-footed forward has been training and playing with Barça Atlètic, the club’s reserve team.

Before this setback, there were genuine reasons for optimism. Bisiwu had impressed during preseason, scoring twice in a friendly against Basel.

The trajectory that brought him to Camp Nou

Barcelona’s scouting department had been tracking Bisiwu since his breakout at Club Brugge and their B-team. He featured notably in the UEFA European Under-17 Championship in 2025, where his performances further cemented his reputation as one of Belgium’s brightest young prospects.

For Bisiwu personally, the timing is brutal. He was already fighting an uphill battle to get registered for first-team action. Now, even if the administrative hurdles clear, he may not be physically available to take advantage of any opening in the squad.
