Social media lit up with claims that Liam Delap is heading to FC Barcelona as the club’s new No. 9. The only problem: the 23-year-old striker is still very much a Chelsea player, locked into a six-year contract that doesn’t expire until 2031.
The rumor, which originated from an unverified post on X, has spread rapidly through football and sports betting circles. But as of now, no official announcement from either Barcelona or Chelsea supports the claim, and the available evidence suggests Delap isn’t going anywhere soon.
What we actually know about Delap’s situation
Delap joined Chelsea from Ipswich Town on June 4, 2025, for a transfer fee of £30M. Chelsea secured him on a deal running through 2031 precisely because they viewed him as a long-term investment.
Before landing at Stamford Bridge, Delap had taken a winding path through English football. Born on February 8, 2003, he came up through Manchester City’s academy before moving to Ipswich Town for roughly £20M in 2024. His performances there were strong enough to attract Chelsea’s attention, and the Blues paid a 50% premium to pry him away just a year later.
His current market value sits at approximately €28M, though recent reports have linked Everton with interest at a valuation closer to £40M.
On November 25, 2025, he scored his first Champions League goal in Chelsea’s 3-0 demolition of Barcelona.
The Barcelona transfer rumor, dissected
Speculation about a Delap-to-Barcelona move began circulating in May and June 2026. The fuel came from unverified social media posts and reports suggesting Chelsea had turned down a $15M offer from Barcelona for the striker.
If that number is accurate, it would represent a lowball bid of remarkable proportions. Chelsea paid £30M for Delap just a year earlier. Offering roughly half that amount isn’t a serious negotiating position.
Barcelona, for their part, have been navigating well-documented financial constraints for several years. The club has relied on accounting maneuvers and player sales to stay within La Liga’s salary cap rules. Even if interest in Delap is genuine, finding the financial headroom to complete a deal at a price Chelsea would accept presents a separate and significant challenge.
