Mexico City’s Zócalo, one of the largest public squares in the world, is getting a massive makeover. FIFA has designated the iconic plaza as the main venue for its official Fan Festival during the 2026 World Cup, turning a space that has hosted everything from Aztec ceremonies to political protests into a sprawling, open-air watch party running from June 11 through July 19.

The setup will include free public match screenings, live music, cultural showcases, and food experiences. For Mexico’s opening match, organizers expect attendance to hit as high as 100,000 spectators. Enhanced security measures have been introduced in response to local protests surrounding the event.

Kraken enters the pitch as FIFA’s crypto partner

On June 9, Kraken was announced as the Official Crypto Exchange Supporter of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The partnership is designed to boost awareness and adoption of cryptocurrencies across North America and Europe through activations tied to the tournament.

FIFA previously worked with platforms like Algorand and Crypto.com during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. No direct crypto token integrations or blockchain-based fan experiences have been tied specifically to the Zócalo Fan Fest itself. The Kraken sponsorship operates at the tournament level, not the plaza level.

A Solana-based memecoin called “Fifa World Cup 2026” (ticker: FWC26) has popped up with zero official affiliation with FIFA or the tournament.

Why the Zócalo matters

Formally known as the Plaza de la Constitución, the Zócalo sits in the heart of Mexico City’s historic center. The 2026 tournament is being co-hosted by the US, Mexico, and Canada, and marks the first expansion to 48 teams.

The plaza’s transformation includes LGBTQ+ flags and decorations, a visible signal of inclusivity that stands in contrast to the controversies that surrounded the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where LGBTQ+ expression was restricted.

What this means for crypto investors

FIFA is comfortable taking sponsorship money from crypto companies, but no token-gated access, NFT tickets, or blockchain-based merchandise authentication has been announced for the Fan Fest. The technology is being endorsed at the brand level, not the product level.
