FIFA World Cup’s biggest match comes with crypto’s biggest sports sponsorship yet

Portugal faces Spain in the round of 16 on July 6, 2026, pitting 41-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo against 18-year-old Lamine Yamal. That’s a 23-year age gap on the same pitch.

On June 9, 2026, FIFA announced Kraken as the Official Crypto Exchange Supporter for the World Cup. The partnership includes Bitcoin rewards and promotional fan engagement activities throughout the tournament.

FIFA is also piloting blockchain-based ticketing on the Avalanche network for the tournament.

Ronaldo himself is no stranger to crypto. He has collaborated with Binance on NFTs since June 2022, launching multiple collections tied to his personal brand.

Ronaldo doesn’t have a fungible fan token. No tradeable CR7 coin exists on major exchanges. His crypto footprint has been limited to the NFT side, which means there’s no direct token for traders to speculate on ahead of the match.

Yamal, at 18, doesn’t have any known crypto partnerships at all.

Portugal and Spain last met at a World Cup in 2018, and that game ended 3-3, with Ronaldo scoring a hat trick, including a stunning late free kick to salvage a draw.

Ronaldo acknowledged Yamal’s potential in pre-match comments, praising the teenager while noting Spain’s overall squad depth.

The 2026 World Cup is the first to feature 48 teams and is being hosted across the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
