Fiorentina signs Brazilian centre-back Viery for €15M plus add-ons

ACF Fiorentina has wrapped up a deal to bring Brazilian centre-back Viery Fernandes to Florence, paying Grêmio a base fee of €15 million with additional performance-related add-ons built into the agreement.

The 21-year-old defender had been the subject of a transfer tug-of-war for weeks. Fiorentina’s first attempt, a €12 million offer lodged back in June, was swiftly rejected by the Brazilian club.

How the deal came together

Grêmio had set their asking price somewhere between €15 million and €25 million for Viery. Fiorentina ultimately met the floor of that range, structuring the deal with a guaranteed €15 million base and variable bonuses that could push the total higher.

Fiorentina wasn’t the only club circling. Newcastle, Tottenham, and Roma all expressed interest in the young defender.

Viery turned 21 in January 2026.

Why Fiorentina needed this signing

Fiorentina conceded 50 goals last season. The club has made a deliberate effort to recruit South American talent under head coach Fabio Grosso, and Viery’s signing continues that pattern.

What this means for the broader market

For Grêmio, the add-on structure means they could receive more than the base fee if Viery hits certain milestones. The fact that Newcastle and Tottenham were also in the conversation but didn’t close the deal raises its own questions. Premier League clubs typically have deeper pockets than their Serie A counterparts, so either they weren’t willing to meet Grêmio’s terms, or Viery and his representatives preferred the playing time guarantees that a club like Fiorentina could offer over the financial firepower of the English top flight.
