Fulham in advanced talks to sign David Affengruber from Elche

Fulham are closing in on a deal to bring Austrian defender David Affengruber to the Premier League from Elche, with negotiations between the two clubs described as advanced ahead of the transfer deadline.

The reported fee of around €10 million would represent a considerable discount on Affengruber’s estimated market value of roughly €20 million. That gap largely comes down to the defender’s contract situation, with his current deal at Elche running until June 2027, giving the Spanish club limited leverage to demand full price.

From free transfer to eight-figure asset

He joined Elche on a free transfer in August 2024 after leaving Austrian side Sturm Graz, where he had spent three seasons winning multiple domestic titles. Elche, who were in Spain’s Segunda División at the time, took a flier on a 23-year-old central defender with limited international profile.

Affengruber became a defensive cornerstone as Elche earned promotion to La Liga, and he continued to impress once the club reached the top flight. He has now racked up over 76 appearances across both divisions for the Spanish side.

One particularly eye-catching performance came against Atlético Madrid, where he earned a 9.7 rating on Sofascore.

Why Fulham want him

Under manager Álvaro Arbeloa, Fulham have been looking to strengthen their defensive options. The 25-year-old Austrian international made his senior debut for Austria in 2026 and has already accumulated several caps.

Fulham aren’t the only club that noticed. Southampton, Crystal Palace, Manchester United, and Juventus have all reportedly shown interest in the centre-back.

For Elche, turning a free signing into a €10 million departure funds future recruitment and strengthens the club’s financial position as they look to maintain their place in La Liga.
