Google DeepMind signs AI research deal with film studio A24

Google DeepMind is betting $75 million that the studio behind Moonlight and Everything Everywhere All at Once can help it figure out what AI tools filmmakers actually want. The partnership with A24, announced on June 22, represents one of the most significant collaborations between a frontier AI lab and a major creative institution to date.

The deal will place DeepMind researchers directly inside A24’s creative teams. Their mandate: build AI tools that support storyboarding, production planning, editing, and distribution.

The structure matters more than the money

A24’s filmmakers retain full creative control over their projects. Google gets no access to A24’s production data or intellectual property.

DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis framed the initiative as one focused on empowering “authentic, meaningful storytelling.”

Why Hollywood is watching closely

The 2023 SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes were partly driven by fears about AI replacing creative workers. Rather than deploying AI as a cost-cutting measure that replaces human jobs, the stated goal is augmentation: storyboarding tools that help directors visualize scenes faster, production planning systems that optimize shooting schedules, and editing assistance that handles tedious technical tasks so editors can focus on storytelling choices.

The critical safeguard here is that DeepMind researchers will be embedded within creative teams, not working in isolation.

What this means for the AI landscape

This also positions Google against competitors who are racing to dominate the AI-powered creative tools market. OpenAI has been pushing Sora for video generation. Adobe has integrated generative AI across its Creative Cloud suite. Meta has released various creative AI tools. But none of those companies have a formal research partnership with a studio of A24’s caliber.

DeepMind isn’t announcing a filmmaking AI tool. It’s announcing that it wants to figure out what such a tool should even look like.
