Google just turned every Google account holder into a potential video producer. The company rolled out free 1080p HD AI video generation through Google Vids, powered by its Gemini Omni 1.1 Flash model, making high-quality AI-generated video accessible to anyone willing to visit vids.new on a desktop browser.
The tool, which previously lived behind the walls of Google Workspace as an enterprise product, now works with personal Google accounts at no charge.
What you actually get
Personal accounts can generate approximately six AI video clips or avatars per month. That’s not unlimited, but it’s enough to experiment, build a quick explainer, or produce short-form content without touching Adobe Premiere.
The feature set goes beyond simple text-to-video prompts. Users get scene extension with visual consistency, meaning the AI can stretch a scene while keeping the look and feel coherent across frames. There’s also exact duration control for clips, a small but important detail for anyone who’s ever wrestled with timing in a video editor.
Every output carries a SynthID watermark, Google’s system for flagging AI-generated content. The watermark is embedded to make detection possible even after screenshots or re-uploads.
Users who need more than six clips per month can upgrade to paid AI plans or higher-tier Google Workspace subscriptions.
From boardroom tool to everyone’s editing suite
Google Vids launched in 2024 as a Workspace-only product. Its original pitch was corporate video content: training materials, customer support walkthroughs, internal communications.
An April 2026 update introduced Veo models with 10 free generations per month, giving users their first taste of AI-powered video without a Workspace seat. The Gemini Omni 1.1 Flash integration represents the next step in that trajectory, upgrading both the quality ceiling (1080p HD) and the underlying model sophistication.
A forthcoming feature powered by Gemini 3.8 Flash-Lite is expected to add multilingual voiceover capabilities in more than 100 languages.
The competitive landscape just got more crowded
The AI video generation market has been heating up, with startups like Runway, Pika, and Luma Labs attracting significant venture capital and creative talent. OpenAI’s Sora made waves when it debuted, and Meta has been building its own video generation capabilities. But none of those competitors can match Google’s distribution advantage: more than a billion active Google accounts worldwide, all one click away from vids.new.
