HIVE Digital Technologies projects mining margins of 36% to 52% as Bitcoin approaches $80K

When your electricity comes from Paraguayan waterfalls instead of natural gas turbines, rising Bitcoin prices hit a little different. HIVE Digital Technologies just showed investors exactly how different during its Q1 FY2027 earnings webcast, projecting mining margins that scale from 36% at a $60K Bitcoin price all the way to 52% at $80K.

The margin math

President and CEO Aydin Kilic walked through the numbers during HIVE’s August 17 presentation, and the math is straightforward. At a 5-cent per kWh operational expenditure, the company’s mining margins after electricity costs sit at 36% when Bitcoin trades at $60K. Bump that to $70K and margins climb to 45%. At $80K, the company keeps 52 cents on every dollar of mining revenue after power costs.

The 5-cent per kWh assumption underpinning those projections is key. That rate is achievable thanks to HIVE’s reliance on hydroelectric power sourced from Paraguay, one of the cheapest energy markets on the planet for large-scale consumers.

Q1 earnings paint a growth picture

The margin projections weren’t delivered in a vacuum. HIVE’s actual Q1 FY2027 results provided the receipts. The company posted $79.1 million in quarterly revenue, a 73% increase compared to the same period a year earlier.

Bitcoin mining drove the overwhelming majority of that number, contributing $72.1 million. Over the quarter, HIVE mined 1,004 BTC. The operational hashrate powering that output sits at approximately 24 EH/s, with an installed fleet capacity of 25.3 EH/s.

Gross operating margin came in at $24.2 million for the quarter.

Beyond the core mining business, HIVE’s push into high-performance computing and AI infrastructure added $7 million to the revenue total, roughly 9% of total revenue.

The renewable energy advantage

HIVE’s hydroelectric power strategy in Paraguay addresses two problems simultaneously. The obvious one is cost. Hydroelectric power is among the cheapest generation sources globally, and Paraguay’s Itaipu and Yacyreta dams produce far more electricity than the country’s domestic economy can absorb. That surplus creates bargain-basement pricing for industrial consumers willing to set up shop there.

HIVE rebranded from HIVE Blockchain Technologies to HIVE Digital Technologies as part of a broader repositioning that emphasizes both its green energy credentials and its diversification into HPC and AI workloads.

What the margin curve means for investors

The 36%-to-52% margin range Kilic presented is essentially a sensitivity table for HIVE’s profitability across different Bitcoin price scenarios. Moving from $60K to $70K Bitcoin adds 9 percentage points of margin. Moving from $70K to $80K adds another 7 points. A 33% increase in Bitcoin’s price from $60K to $80K translates to a 44% increase in mining margin percentage.

At $7 million per quarter, HPC and AI revenues are not yet material enough to stabilize earnings during a deep crypto winter. HIVE’s 73% year-over-year revenue growth suggests the current cycle is still firmly in feast territory.
