For decades, if a European satellite needed a ride to orbit, it either hitched a lift on an American, Russian, or Chinese rocket, or waited for Arianespace’s infrastructure to free up. On September 5, 2026, that calculus changed. Isar Aerospace, a Munich-based startup founded by three university students in 2018, launched its Spectrum rocket from Andøya Spaceport in northern Norway and reached orbit in roughly seven minutes, making it the first commercial company to put a rocket into orbit from European soil.
The launch lifted off at 22:12 local time and successfully deployed five CubeSats selected through a German Space Agency competition, along with one ESA-linked technology experiment.
A second-attempt success built on one very expensive lesson
Isar’s first Spectrum flight, in March 2025, ended roughly 30 seconds after liftoff. The company went back to the drawing board, ran extensive testing and development work, and returned to the pad roughly 18 months later with a significantly more mature vehicle.
Spectrum stands 28 meters tall with a diameter of about 2 meters. Its first stage runs on nine Aquila engines, the second stage on one, and both stages burn a combination of propane and liquid oxygen. The rocket is designed to carry payloads of up to 1,000 kilograms to low Earth orbit.
CEO Daniel Metzler framed the accomplishment in explicitly competitive terms, noting that Isar achieved in a few years what traditional European space programs took decades to build.
Money, contracts, and what Europe’s space gap actually costs
In June 2026, Isar closed a funding round of approximately €270 million, pushing its valuation to around €2 billion. Two months later, in August, the European Space Agency awarded the company a €200 million contract under its European Launcher Challenge, a program specifically designed to prove that a privately developed European rocket could reach orbit by 2027. Isar beat that deadline by roughly a year.
Europe’s dependence on outside launch providers is not just a prestige problem. It is a supply chain vulnerability. After Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Soyuz rockets were no longer available to European customers, and the retirement of Ariane 5 before Ariane 6 reached operational readiness left a genuine gap in launch capacity.
What comes next, and why the satellite market cares
The CubeSat payloads on this flight were largely educational and experimental, which is typical for a vehicle’s first operational mission.
ESA Director General Josef Aschbacher and German government officials publicly celebrated the launch, framing it as the beginning of a new era in European space access. Europe now has a commercially operated orbital rocket on its own launchpad, operated by a company that did not exist a decade ago and that has already demonstrated it can recover from failure rather than fold.
