Jordan Pickford now owns a piece of English football history. The Everton goalkeeper made his 18th FIFA World Cup appearance during England’s quarter-final against Norway at the 2026 tournament, surpassing Peter Shilton’s record of 17 that had stood since 1990.
The record and what it took
Pickford first tied Shilton’s mark of 17 World Cup appearances during England’s Round of 16 clash against Mexico on July 5-6, 2026. He then broke it outright in the quarter-final against Norway, a match that also happened to be his 90th cap for the national team.
Shilton’s record was compiled across three tournaments: 1982, 1986, and 1990. Pickford matched the feat across 2018, 2022, and 2026, meaning he has been England’s undisputed first-choice keeper for nearly a decade of international football.
Pickford was named to England’s 26-man squad on May 22, 2026.
The club-level disconnect
Pickford’s international career has been virtually bulletproof while his club situation at Everton has generated constant debate. Everton’s struggles in recent Premier League seasons have raised questions about whether Pickford’s talent is being underutilized at club level. Yet every time he puts on the England shirt, the noise disappears. Three consecutive World Cups as the starter. Ninety caps. And now, the all-time World Cup appearance record for his country.
