Julian Nagelsmann steps down as Germany coach after World Cup exit, and sports betting markets are watching

Julian Nagelsmann has resigned as head coach of the German national football team, ending a tenure that began with genuine optimism and concluded with a historically embarrassing World Cup exit. The decision came on July 3, 2026, just days after Germany was knocked out in the round of 32 by Paraguay, losing 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw.

It was Germany’s first penalty shootout defeat in World Cup history, and marks the country’s third consecutive early exit from a major tournament.

What happened and why it matters beyond the pitch

Germany topped their group, looked like a team capable of a deep run, and then imploded against Paraguay in the knockout stage.

Nagelsmann, who was appointed in September 2023 as a replacement for Hansi Flick, initially signaled he wanted to stay. After the Paraguay loss on June 30, he referenced his contract extension through Euro 2028, quipping that he had “14 million reasons” not to walk away. That’s a reference to the reported value of his deal with the German Football Association, the DFB.

One day later, the tune changed. Following a three-and-a-half-hour meeting with DFB officials and a severance package reportedly worth approximately 7 million euros, Nagelsmann agreed to step down.

The DFB is now reportedly eyeing potential successors, with Jurgen Klopp’s name surfacing as a leading candidate.
