Lionel Messi extends record for most goals in finals to 36

Lionel Messi has done it again. The Argentine forward scored in yet another final, pushing his all-time record for goals in finals to 36, a number that increasingly looks like it belongs in a video game rather than real life.

To put that in perspective, the previous benchmark belonged to Pelé, widely considered football’s greatest of all time for decades. His total: 29. Messi has lapped him by seven goals.

A career defined by showing up when it matters most

Messi has now appeared in more than 47 finals across club and international football. He’s won 33 of them. That’s a win rate north of 70% in the matches that define legacies.

The bulk of that damage came during his time at Barcelona, where he scored roughly 31 of those 36 finals goals. Copa del Rey finals, Champions League finals, Spanish Super Cups: if a trophy was on the line and Messi was on the pitch, the ball had a habit of finding the net.

His brace in the 2022 FIFA World Cup final against France, a match widely regarded as one of the greatest finals ever played, silenced the last remaining critics. His international career with Argentina produced 125 goals in 207 appearances.

Still adding chapters at Inter Miami

When Messi moved to Inter Miami in 2023, plenty of observers assumed he was entering a victory lap. Instead, he kept scoring in finals, including a strike in the 2026 Campeones Cup final against Cruz Azul.

The consistency is almost absurd. Across four different teams, spanning Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain, Inter Miami, and the Argentine national team, Messi has maintained an ability to elevate his performance precisely when the stakes peak.

What the record really means

Records in football are tricky to compare across eras. Pelé played in a time with fewer competitions, different squad structures, and a style of defending that would get you a red card in about four seconds today. Messi has benefited from more finals opportunities thanks to the expanded tournament calendar of modern football.

The 36-goal mark also speaks to longevity. Plenty of elite forwards have been brilliant in finals for a stretch. Ronaldo Nazário was devastating in World Cup knockout rounds. Zinedine Zidane had an almost supernatural ability to produce in Champions League finals. But sustaining that level across two decades of professional football, accumulating finals appearances at a rate that makes the number 47 feel almost routine, is something different entirely.
