LMAX Group, the operator of one of the longest-running institutional crypto trading platforms, is exploring a potential sale or initial public offering. The firm has tapped Morgan Stanley and KBW to advise on the process.
LMAX Group was formed in 2010 as a joint initiative between Betfair, the online betting exchange, and Goldman Sachs. Its initial focus was foreign exchange and Contracts for Difference trading.
Then came 2018, when LMAX launched LMAX Digital, an institutional-only cryptocurrency exchange. LMAX Digital has won “Best Crypto Trading Platform” awards consecutively from 2022 through 2025. The platform supports spot trading across several major digital assets including BTC, ETH, LTC, BCH, XRP, and SOL, among others. It operates under the oversight of the Gibraltar Financial Services Commission. LMAX has never issued a crypto token and operates purely as a trading venue.
In May 2026, LMAX launched a Kiosk interface that allows clients to convert crypto holdings into margin for FX and CFD trading, essentially bridging digital assets directly into legacy trading workflows.
Morgan Stanley needs no introduction. KBW, a Stifel company, specializes in financial services M&A and has deep expertise in exchange and market infrastructure deals.
If LMAX goes the IPO route, it would join a relatively small cohort of publicly traded companies whose primary business involves crypto trading. Coinbase remains the most prominent example, but LMAX has been institutional-only from day one.
No timeline, valuation, or potential buyer list has been made public.
