Manchester United’s £30M Zirkzee deal highlights football’s evolving transfer economics and what crypto investors can learn from it

Manchester United is finalizing a loan deal that would send striker Joshua Zirkzee to Juventus with a £30 million option to buy. That’s roughly £6.5 million less than the club paid Bologna for him in 2024. In any asset class, selling below your cost basis is a move that deserves scrutiny.

Zirkzee moved to Old Trafford from Bologna for approximately £36.5 million in 2024, part of United’s ongoing effort to rebuild through the transfer market. Two years later, the club appears willing to let him go for £30 million if Juventus exercises the buy option after the loan period.

That’s a roughly 18% haircut on the original purchase price.

Reports indicate that Zirkzee’s representatives have responded positively to Juventus’ interest. The player appears willing to make the move to Turin, which in transfer negotiations is about half the battle.

The negotiations emerged over the past 24 to 48 hours and are described as “advanced,” which in football-speak means both clubs have agreed on the broad framework and are now arguing about performance bonuses, sell-on clauses, and which side pays for the medical exam.

The Zirkzee situation also illustrates concentration risk. United reportedly invested £36.5 million in a single striker who didn’t deliver the expected returns.
