Melbourne Victory’s Lockyer signing highlights A-League clubs’ pivot from NFTs back to traditional roster building

1 hour ago 19

Melbourne Victory announced the signing of Welsh international defender Tom Lockyer on 11 July 2026, adding a battle-tested Premier League captain to its A-League roster. The move comes just weeks after former Spanish midfielder Juan Mata acquired a significant minority stake in the club.

From NFT partnerships to old-school squad building

Back in March 2022, Melbourne Victory partnered with NFT platform Sanctum-X as an Asian Champions League sponsor.

Lockyer has 16 caps for Wales and featured at both UEFA EURO 2020 and the 2022 FIFA World Cup. He captained Luton Town during their Premier League campaign in the 2023/24 season and returned to professional football after suffering a life-threatening cardiac arrest in 2023. Coach Giovanni Savarese will have a defender who has operated at the highest levels of English football.

The Mata factor

Juan Mata’s minority stake acquisition on 29 June 2026 adds another layer to this story. The former Manchester United and Chelsea midfielder is set to chair a new football committee that will guide the club’s strategic direction. He suited up for Melbourne Victory during the 2025/26 season before moving into the boardroom.
