Mohamed Salah’s blockbuster Trabzonspor deal highlights crypto and fan token opportunities in Turkish football

Mohamed Salah, one of the most marketable athletes on the planet, has signed a two-year deal with Turkish Super Lig club Trabzonspor worth €17 million per season. The free transfer, announced on August 6, 2026, after Salah’s departure from Liverpool, instantly makes Trabzonspor one of the most commercially interesting clubs in European football.

Salah’s contract includes a 20% share of merchandise sales bearing his name, plus performance-based bonuses on top of the base salary. That merchandise clause is unusual and significant. It signals that Trabzonspor expects Salah’s brand to generate substantial revenue far beyond matchday ticket sales.

Hundreds of fans greeted the Egyptian forward at Istanbul airport on August 5, where he recorded a video message asking “Trabzon, are you ready?” He is reportedly the first major Muslim star to join Turkish football since 2012, which adds a cultural dimension to an already outsized commercial story. Salah’s fanbase across the Middle East and North Africa is enormous. That audience now has a reason to pay attention to the Turkish Super Lig every week.

Turkey’s top clubs have been early and enthusiastic participants in the fan token economy. Galatasaray, Fenerbahce, and Trabzonspor all have partnerships or token offerings through platforms like Socios and Bitci, the latter being a Turkish crypto exchange that has sponsored multiple Super Lig clubs and even held naming rights for stadiums.

Turkish regulators have been tightening crypto oversight, with new licensing requirements for exchanges taking effect in recent years. That regulatory framework, while adding compliance costs, has also given institutional partners more confidence to engage with sports-crypto ventures.

Salah’s 20% merchandise revenue share is worth watching from a tokenization perspective. If Trabzonspor or its partners explore fractional revenue-sharing models tied to player merchandising, something several blockchain startups have pitched across European football, Salah’s contract structure would be almost purpose-built for that kind of experiment.
