SSC Napoli have wrapped up a deal to bring Chelsea centre-back Benoît Badiashile to Naples on a season-long loan. The French defender has completed his medical and put pen to paper, ending months of speculation about where he’d land after falling out of favor in west London.
The agreement includes a loan fee estimated at €3-4 million, a buy option set at €27 million, and Napoli’s commitment to covering Badiashile’s full salary for the duration of the loan. For a player Chelsea bought for €38 million from Monaco in January 2023, that buy option represents a significant markdown, roughly 29% less than what the Blues originally paid.
A fresh start after a frustrating chapter
Badiashile’s time at Chelsea has been, to put it diplomatically, underwhelming. Across the 2025-26 season, he managed just 16 appearances in all competitions. Injuries and inconsistent form kept him on the periphery of a squad that was already overflowing with defensive options.
Since arriving at Stamford Bridge in early 2023, the 24-year-old has accumulated 71 appearances and two goals. His two caps for the French national team, the most recent coming back in September 2022, feel like a lifetime ago in football terms.
His medical took place at Villa Stuart in Rome. From there, he traveled south to Naples to finalize the paperwork.
Why Badiashile over Aguerd
Napoli didn’t arrive at Badiashile by accident. The club had been exploring multiple defensive targets over the summer window, with Nayef Aguerd of Marseille sitting on the shortlist as an alternative option.
Aguerd, a Moroccan international, had also drawn interest from Real Sociedad, though that link never materialized into anything concrete. Once Napoli’s negotiations with Chelsea for Badiashile gained momentum, Aguerd was effectively shelved. The economics of the Badiashile deal, a manageable loan fee with a buy option rather than a permanent transfer, likely made it the more attractive proposition. It also helps that Badiashile is four years younger than Aguerd, giving Napoli more long-term upside if they decide to exercise that €27 million purchase clause.
Chelsea’s ongoing squad surgery
From Chelsea’s perspective, this deal is part of a broader effort to trim a bloated roster. Under Xabi Alonso, the club has been moving on players who don’t fit first-choice plans, and Badiashile’s departure is one of several loan exits designed to reduce the wage bill while keeping open the possibility of recouping transfer fees later.
