OpenAI enables project and chat synchronization across platforms

OpenAI rolled out a series of updates that synchronize projects, chats, and voice capabilities across its AI tools, including Codex and ChatGPT Work. The result is a unified workspace where you can start a session on one device and continue it on another without losing context.

The centerpiece of the update, which began rolling out on July 9, 2026, is the merger of the standalone Codex application directly into ChatGPT’s desktop app for both macOS and Windows. Rather than maintaining separate applications for general-purpose AI chat and developer-focused coding tasks, OpenAI has collapsed them into a single interface.

What actually changed

The most consequential shift is cloud synchronization for Work conversations. Previously, ChatGPT’s desktop app maintained local sessions that didn’t travel with you. Now, cloud-based Work chats sync seamlessly between web, mobile, and desktop environments. If you’re deep into a research thread on your browser at the office, that same conversation is waiting for you in the desktop app at home.

ChatGPT Projects, which bundle related files, context, and discussion threads into organized containers, are now fully integrated into the desktop experience. This means the project you assembled on the web, complete with uploaded documents and multi-turn conversations, surfaces naturally in the desktop client with all its context intact.

A follow-up update on July 16, 2026, refined the experience further. OpenAI improved filtering and discovery features within the app, making it easier to locate specific chats and projects. The update also optimized the transition between Chat and Work functionalities.

Voice support also arrived for both Work and Codex within the desktop app. You can now talk through a coding problem or dictate instructions to your Work assistant without reaching for your keyboard.

Why Codex still matters as a distinct workflow

The merger doesn’t mean Codex lost its identity. Within the unified app, Codex continues to operate as a specialized environment for developers, maintaining its distinct coding workflow. The difference is that it no longer requires a separate download or a context switch to a different application.

Developers who use Codex for code generation, debugging, and repository exploration often need to reference broader conversations happening in ChatGPT. Now, a developer can be working through a Codex coding session and pull in context from a related ChatGPT Work thread without leaving the app.
