OpenAI rolls out ChatGPT Maps for EU users

OpenAI has started rolling out its ChatGPT Maps feature to users in the European Union, bringing a dedicated “places experience” to a market that typically waits longer than anyone else for new AI capabilities. The feature, accessible through a navigation element in the interface or by typing the /maps command, lets EU users engage in interactive, map-based conversations within ChatGPT.

What ChatGPT Maps actually does

The Maps feature goes beyond the basic local search and map display functionality that OpenAI first introduced back in December 2024. That earlier iteration let users search for nearby businesses and see results plotted on a map. The new version represents a more comprehensive mapping tool, a fully integrated “places experience” designed for richer location-based interactions.

OpenAI had already been layering in mapping capabilities over the past year and a half. In October 2025, the company rolled out integrations with apps like Zillow that leveraged mapping elements, letting users explore real estate listings with geographic context. The EU Maps launch builds on that foundation, but packages the experience into something more cohesive and purpose-built.

Europe’s regulatory maze

The EU’s trifecta of tech regulation, GDPR, the EU AI Act, and the Digital Services Act, has consistently slowed OpenAI’s feature deployments in the region. Memory tools and advanced data-processing capabilities have previously been delayed or modified to comply with European standards.

OpenAI has been methodical about building the infrastructure needed to operate in Europe. In February 2025, the company announced data residency options for enterprise customers in the EU, a move that signaled its long-term commitment to the market while addressing sovereignty concerns that European regulators care deeply about.

The company hasn’t published an official blog post or press release confirming the specifics of the EU Maps rollout, which is consistent with a phased approach.

Competitive implications

Google, which still dominates the mapping space globally, has been integrating AI features into Google Maps at an accelerating pace. For OpenAI, having a compelling maps experience inside ChatGPT is about keeping users within its ecosystem rather than sending them to Google every time they have a location-related question.
