PSG has officially told Renato Sanches and his representatives to find a new destination this summer. The French giants have deemed the 28-year-old Portuguese midfielder surplus to requirements under head coach Luis Enrique, drawing a line under what has been one of the more disappointing signings of the club’s recent spending era.
Sanches joined PSG in the summer of 2022. In the time since, he’s managed just 27 appearances and 2 goals.
A loan spell that went nowhere
PSG shipped Sanches out on loan to Greek club Panathinaikos for the 2025-26 season. Panathinaikos had the option to make the move permanent. They declined to exercise it.
With his contract running until June 30, 2026, PSG finds itself in an awkward position. Reports suggest minimal interest from other clubs for either a permanent transfer or another loan arrangement.
The broader PSG midfield overhaul
Sanches’s exit is part of a wider restructuring in PSG’s engine room. Luis Enrique has been reshaping the squad since his arrival, and PSG has clearly decided they can’t afford to keep waiting for a player whose body keeps betraying his talent.
His recent decision to switch representation and join the Wasserman Group suggests he’s at least trying to take proactive steps.
What this means for the transfer market
Sanches moved from Benfica to Bayern Munich as one of the most hyped young talents in European football. PSG took a swing on him in 2022, betting that a change of league might unlock the player everyone saw glimpses of at Euro 2016. That bet didn’t pay off, and now the club is left trying to move a depreciating asset with a contract that expires in roughly a year.
For any club considering a move, PSG would likely accept a minimal transfer fee, possibly even a free release, just to clear the salary commitment.
