Profound hits $1.8B valuation as brands scramble to show up in AI search results

Two years ago, most CMOs were obsessing over Google’s blue links. Now they’re paying Profound to make sure ChatGPT mentions their brand in the right tone of voice. That shift just earned the New York-based startup a $1.8 billion valuation.

Profound closed a $180 million Series D round co-led by Sequoia Capital and Kleiner Perkins, nearly doubling the $1 billion valuation it reached during its Series C just seven months earlier, in February 2026. Total capital raised since the company’s founding in 2024 now exceeds $335 million.

What Profound actually does

The company has coined its own category: answer engine optimization, or AEO. Instead of optimizing web pages so Google ranks them higher, Profound helps brands monitor and improve how they appear inside AI-generated answers, across tools like ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, and Perplexity.

The platform tracks three things: how often a brand shows up in AI responses, what sentiment those responses carry, and where the brand is positioned relative to competitors. Then it recommends content strategies to nudge those results in a more favorable direction.

Profound currently serves more than 700 enterprise customers, including roughly 10% of the Fortune 500. For a company that started with a seed round of about $3.5 million in 2024, that adoption curve is remarkably steep.

The market context driving this growth

A company might rank first on Google for a keyword and still be completely absent from ChatGPT’s answer to the same question. Worse, an AI model might mention the brand but frame it negatively, pulling from outdated reviews or misinterpreted data.

Profound was named the sole leader on G2’s inaugural Winter 2026 Answer Engine Optimization grid, a recognition that essentially says: this category now exists, and Profound owns it.

Founded by CEO James Cadwallader and CTO Dylan Babbs, the company has moved from concept to category leader in roughly two years.

Why the valuation nearly doubled so fast

Going from $1 billion to $1.8 billion in seven months raises a fair question: what changed between February and September 2026?

Crossing the 700-enterprise mark, with a meaningful Fortune 500 penetration rate, signals that Profound isn’t just selling a concept. It’s selling software that procurement teams at large organizations are willing to approve, budget for, and renew.

The $335 million in total funding positions Profound to invest aggressively in product development and sales infrastructure before well-funded competitors can establish themselves.

The risk is that AI search itself remains volatile. The major AI platforms—OpenAI, Google, Anthropic—regularly update how their models surface and cite information. Google already sells advertising against its AI Overviews, and it’s not hard to imagine OpenAI or Perplexity building similar monetization layers that give brands direct control over their presence.
